New Release Update, September 28

6a00d8341c974f53ef011572250dac970b-450wiIt took me four years as a student in North Carolina to learn that bluegrass was cool, but the rest of the country seems to be catching up all on their own, what with all of the hype surrounding the latest release from Concord, NC’s the Avett Brothers. I and Love and You has been getting some pretty serious PR attention, streaming online at all the right places and being swooned over such lovely corporations as Starbucks. Okay, so maybe being signed to a major and produced by Rick Rubin has it’s drawbacks, but you can’t deny that the Avett Brothers are one folksy, bearded, fun fest.

drummer-feel-good-together-album-artIt’s no secret that Akron based duo The Black Keys is one of the best things to come out of Ohio, and they seem to be the musical gift that keeps on giving. After Dan Auerbach released his solo LP earlier this year, we should have realized that bandmate Patrick Carney wasn’t far behind with his own side project. Drummer is the collaboration of five Ohio-based musicians who have each manned the drums at one point or another in their career. Expect some keys-heavy shoegaze from their debut, Feel Good Together.

LA14011Be Set Free is the fifth LP release from Pennsylvania born and bred Langhorne Slim. After a stop at Bonnaroo and tours with the Avett Brothers, Cake, and most recently the Low Anthem, it seems more and more folk-fans are catching on to Sean Scolnick’s sound. And hey – we know today’s music landscaped is littered with folk singers, but if there was ever a guy to give a chance it’s this one.

SwellSeason_StrictJoyThe Swell Season accidentally became a band when Glen Hansard and and Marketa Irglova told their friend they’d star in his low-budget movie, Once. Turns out having the Frames frontman pen the songs for your movie might make someone interested in seeing it, and now we have fiction-turned fact with the Dublin-meets-Prague duo releasing their sophomore LP Strict Joy. Expect more of Glen’s heartfelt lyrics mixed with Marketa’s sweet soprano.
