New Release Update

Yeasayer – Odd Blood
Secretly Canadian / buy!

Odd Blood is the second studio album from Brooklyn’s experimental rockers Yeasayer. Fans haven’t seen a new LP from the group since 2007’s All Hour Cymbals, which received a slew of positive attention from all the “right” places. First single “Ambling Alp” was released by the band in late October.

Hot Chip – One Life Stand
Astralwerks / buy!

One Life Stand is the fourth studio album from London-based synth-pop quintet Hot Chip. The album has been held in pretty high anticipation after the success of 2008’s Made In The Dark, and is promised to sound more or less from the same vein.

Angelo Spencer – Et Les Hauts Sommets
K Recs / buy

If you aren’t quite sure why you recognize the name Angelo Spencer let me try and help – he is Kimya Dawson’s French Alp-born husband, who has opened for or been at any Kimya show you might have caught (especially during that wonderful Juno phase. Well, Angelo is more than capable of standing alone on his own two feet – which is obvious upon first listen to Et Les Hauts Sommets (translation: At The High Peaks), an instrumental piece you’ll be happy fell into your lap this month.

Also Out This Week:
Ben+Vesper – LuvInIdleness

News Briefs

Jay Reatard Dies at 29

Memphis based garage musician Jay Reatard passed away in his sleep Tuesday night. Under the birth name Jimmy Lee Lindsey, Jr., the musician was found at 3:30 AM and local police officials have opened an investigation into the cause of death, which is really the only details I’ve been able to find on the matter. Reatard was signed to Matador records, and released his last album Watch Me Fall in August of last year. He was 29 years old, and will be missed by the music community for his infamous antics.

Joanna Newsom Album Details

If you’re like me, rumors of a new Joanna Newsom have been the reason you get out of bed in the morning. Earlier this week we finally got some hard evidence, when a pretty odd comic was released by Newsom’s label Spunk that suggested the album would be released February 23rd. Afterwards the label confirmed that Newsom’s new album, her 3rd LP to follow up 2006’s Ys, will be called Have One On Me and is set for the US release date listed on the comic. Come on, Spunk, throw us an early MP3!
Side Note: She’s been dating Andy Samburg for, like, a few years…anyone else think that’s weird?

Sub Pop March Releases means MP3’s Now

We know, Sub Pop is one of your favorite indie labels, and I guess there’s a reason, those guys are behind tons of the 2010 releases flooding your iPods. In March we’ll see new stuff from the the Seattle label’s signee’s Ruby Suns, Happy Birthday, and Dum Dum Girls, and because they’re just so darn nice, there’s samplin’ MP3’s for all of them!
MP3: Happy Birthday – “Girls FM”
MP3:The Ruby Suns – “Cranberry”

Haiti

This is a music blog, but, just in case you were trapped in a closet this week, there’s something sad happening in Haiti.

New Clogs Album to Ft. Sufjan and Shara

March 2nd marks the release of the new Clogs album, the collaboration of the National’s Bryce Dessner and Aussie composer Padma Newsome. Their fifth album will be entitled The Creatures in The Garden Of Lady Walton and apparently will feature My Brightest Diamond’s Shara Worden and Sufjan Stevens’s Sufjan Stevens. Check out a teaser, below!

Have You Met… The Lighthouse and the Whaler?

I’ve always said that the extensive Metroparks system is one of the best things about Cleveland, and now – along with never-ending bike trails, families of deer, and more pavilions than you can count – we can add the birthplace of one of Cleveland’s catchiest up-and-coming local bands to the list. The Lighthouse and the Whaler are a collection of strapping Cleveland lads who met in the park one day to “jam” and ended up falling in love with the music they could make.

I was introduced to the heartwarming folk stylings of TLATW this Friday when they were featured at the Beachland Ballroom thanks to Scene Magazine, and was immediately blown away. The similarity to Bon Iver and all the other stringed folkies out there was imminent, but there was a creative energy and love for performing on stage that reminded me a lot of one of my favorite NC groups, Lost in the Trees (The use of bells and cello could also be to blame). Although I know many music fans are getting sick of the folk re-revival, I think anyone can decide pretty early on into their debut, self-titled record that The Lighthouse and the Whaler are on to something.

I have a feeling we won’t be enjoying a locals-only-fan experience for much longer on these guys, they’ve been featured on Filter and soon an upcoming Under the Radar compilation. Check them out around town, soon!
