New Release Update

Yeasayer – Odd Blood
Secretly Canadian / buy!

Odd Blood is the second studio album from Brooklyn’s experimental rockers Yeasayer. Fans haven’t seen a new LP from the group since 2007’s All Hour Cymbals, which received a slew of positive attention from all the “right” places. First single “Ambling Alp” was released by the band in late October.

Hot Chip – One Life Stand
Astralwerks / buy!

One Life Stand is the fourth studio album from London-based synth-pop quintet Hot Chip. The album has been held in pretty high anticipation after the success of 2008’s Made In The Dark, and is promised to sound more or less from the same vein.

Angelo Spencer – Et Les Hauts Sommets
K Recs / buy

If you aren’t quite sure why you recognize the name Angelo Spencer let me try and help – he is Kimya Dawson’s French Alp-born husband, who has opened for or been at any Kimya show you might have caught (especially during that wonderful Juno phase. Well, Angelo is more than capable of standing alone on his own two feet – which is obvious upon first listen to Et Les Hauts Sommets (translation: At The High Peaks), an instrumental piece you’ll be happy fell into your lap this month.

Video Watch… Joanna Newsom – New Stuff Live

Man, do I love watching audience-taped live performances. The loud fumbles, the inability to see what exactly is going on, and best of all – the occasional word whispered to the friend in the crowd. If you’re into this fine display of consumer videography like me, then check out these videos of some new tracks from Joanna Newsom. (Seriously though, this is pretty exciting).

King Khan & BBQ Arrested + Blame Manager + Enjoy Shroomin’
If there’s one thing you don’t want to do in Oak Grove, Kentucky, it’s get caught with some far out shroomage. Our friends King Khan & BBQ had to learn it the hard way last week when Arish and Kristin got held up in the slammer for possession of illegal mushrooms. Although the blame was tried to put off on their manager/chaperone, the Christian County (yikes) Jail set the record straight. A few shows were cancelled and fans are left mostly un-surprised.

Have You Met… Girls?

GirlsWhat is it about San Francisco and giving birth to good music? I mean seriously, what did Jerry Garcia drop in the water system to give the Bay area its talent pool?

Today marks the release of one of the soon-to-be most talked about albums of the month (year?), Album, by the lo-fi duo Girls. Hey, I’m just excited to see two non-beareded Sunshine Staters making music that matters. There’s something endearing about the goofy vocals and low maintenance instrumentation that these guys offer, and their more memorable tracks (See: “Lust For Life” and “Hellhole Retrace”) can easily hold their own as some of the standouts of the year so far. If you aren’t normally a garage-y, lo-fi kind of a person I would say give Album your ear, this is some pretty approachable music. If nothing else, at least give it a sample so you have something to offer the many Girls like-it-or-not? debates that will ensue over your PBR tall boy’s over the next month or two.

Mystery of Two [Free Show] – The Bridge Project

islandsMust See (NC): There are a few great shows at the Local 506 this week, but the one you can’t miss happens on Thursday the 24th with the appearance of Montreal royalty, Islands.  Coming off the heels of the release date (tomorrow) of their new album “Vapours” these indie darlings should put on a good night of Canadian music. Show’s at 9, $10 at the door ($8 for non-procrastinators) and DC’s Chain and the Gang open.
sufjanMust See (CLE): If you were lucky enough to snag the quickly sold out tickets, then you already know where you’ll be this Thursday. Sufjan Stevens plays an intimate show at the Beachland Ballroom, which may include music from his new concept piece “The BQE” or some tracks off earlier albums. Either way, it’ll be gorgeous!
wwwb706144_largeMust Hear: September has been bringing out a long list of releases, and this week is no different. Who you need to hear? Some may say it’s Bon Iver‘s new project Volcano Choir, or the Oberst/James/Mogis/Ward collab. Monsters of Folk. Personally, I think you can’t live without grabbing a copy of the new Sea Wolf album “White Water, White Bloom” (but you might as well buy all three).

Album Releases:

Afternoon Naps – Parade
Basement Jaxx – Scars
Banco De Gala – Memories Dreams Reflections
The Big Pink – A Brief History of Love

Have You Met… Verb The Adjective Noun?

23797425There’s something kind of exciting about finding a new band with a lot of potential. Something that tells you “I need to keep an eye on these guys” – and that’s exactly how I feel after listening to Verb The Adjective Noun. I’ll be honest, when their free EP Reds kicks off with opening track “Stoop” you’ll be a little confused. “Is this metal vocalist really singing over banjo riffs?”, you’ll ask yourself. But once the song hits the chorus, you realize this Boston based 5-piece might just be up to something after all.

You see, this EP is going to give you 5 tracks with completely different sounds and styles, but one thing in common – formulaic catchiness. Sure, these guys are all over the map, from poppy rock to acoustic folk to experimental, but each song is at it’s most basic level pretty memorable. I have a feeling that once these guys land on a singular sound to lay their roots in, Verb The Adjective Noun are going to be able to craft a pretty worthwhile LP. In the meantime, enjoy the standout track “Madeline” available below.
