New Release Update

Yeasayer – Odd Blood
Secretly Canadian / buy!

Odd Blood is the second studio album from Brooklyn’s experimental rockers Yeasayer. Fans haven’t seen a new LP from the group since 2007’s All Hour Cymbals, which received a slew of positive attention from all the “right” places. First single “Ambling Alp” was released by the band in late October.

Hot Chip – One Life Stand
Astralwerks / buy!

One Life Stand is the fourth studio album from London-based synth-pop quintet Hot Chip. The album has been held in pretty high anticipation after the success of 2008’s Made In The Dark, and is promised to sound more or less from the same vein.

Angelo Spencer – Et Les Hauts Sommets
K Recs / buy

If you aren’t quite sure why you recognize the name Angelo Spencer let me try and help – he is Kimya Dawson’s French Alp-born husband, who has opened for or been at any Kimya show you might have caught (especially during that wonderful Juno phase. Well, Angelo is more than capable of standing alone on his own two feet – which is obvious upon first listen to Et Les Hauts Sommets (translation: At The High Peaks), an instrumental piece you’ll be happy fell into your lap this month.

Also Out This Week:

The Besnard Lakes – Albatross
Best Coast – Something in the Way 7″

Have You Met… Trouble Books?

Today after work I took a much needed trip to the best local record store on earth (pay attention, Cleveland) Music Saves. While perusing the vinyl selection I got held up on the album you see pictured above. It was so pretty and d.i.y looking, screen printed and seemingly hand glued – it pretty much screamed local. I quickly memorized the band name so that when I returned home I could Sherlock Holmes the situation via the interwebs.

What did I find? Well, not much. I think that’s because the Akron, Ohio based ambient group who call themselves Trouble Books like to float clear and easy up above the bullshit that is music marketing. But that doesn’t mean their experimental pop music is going unheard, by the look of their myspace and last.fm counts. For those who are tuning in, I can understand why. This stuff is really pretty, really interesting, and incredibly soothing. As a huge Books fan I was immediately drawn to what I sampled from their most recent LP, The United Colors of Trouble Books. It’s like the etheral instrumentals of The Books mixed with lo-fi rock music, also known as pretty damn awesome. Score one for local Ohio music, and score two for anyone who finds a way to get their hands on it (hint: try here).

Music Lesson: Merge Records

mergedigital_newsA while ago I did a series on the differences between what makes a record label major or indie. Today I’d like to point some attention at a local NC label that is doing a little celebrating this year, Chapel Hill’s own Merge Records.

In 1989 the group Superchunk (originally just Chunk) decided they wanted to release a record, so they made up their own label and decided to call it Merge. Exactly 20 years later Merge has gained one hell of a track record, from being the relocated home to some of the Elephant Six Collective (Neutral Milk Hotel, Music Tapes), to an outlet for locals like the Rosebuds Merge is one of the best labels in indie music today. (For a complete listing, check it here). Continue reading
